Opened in 1924 in honor of Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley, Riley Hospital is the only hospital in Indiana devoted exclusively to the care of children. This hospital's appreciation for children and their unique developmental needs is reflected in its system of age-based units, providing care for children in infant, toddler, preschool, school age and teen units. The 262 staffed-bed Riley Hospital also has an exceptional newborn intensive care unit, two pediatric intensive care units, a regional burn unit, and the nation's largest ambulatory care center for children. Riley Hospital has a main operating suite that includes 14 operating rooms and an additional 6 operating rooms in the ambulatory care center. Joining Methodist Hospital and University Hospital to form Clarian Health Partners in 1997, anesthesiologists at Riley Hospital for Children provide care for the pediatric portion of the nearly 50,000 surgical procedures performed at Clarian facilities annually. Twenty pediatric anesthesiologists supply not only preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care in the operating rooms, but extend their services to children undergoing cardiac catheterization, specialized diagnostic procedures and radiation therapy. Furthermore, the pediatric anesthesia faculty direct the pediatric surgical critical care units and offer hospital-wide acute and chronic pain management.
