Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi

The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi is regarded as one of the finest and most progressive burn centers in the United States.  This state-of-the-art facility utilizes the most advanced medical techniques and equipment available in the treatment of burns.  Each year, more than 350 burn patients are treated as inpatients via their seventeen intensive care unit suites, and approximately 3000 are seen as outpatients.

With its own free-standing operating suite, anesthesia residents receive comprehensive training in burn management and resuscitation.  This exposure broadens knowledge in volume management, transfusion medicine, and intravascular catheterization in patients with often extremely limited access sites.  In addition, due to the often severe inhalation injury received by patients, it provides exposure to patients with severely disturbed respiratory physiology.  This facilitates learning advanced modes of ventilation not otherwise utilized in the operating room.  All in all, the burn unit at Eskenazi provides unique anesthetic challenges and exposure rarely available at other programs.
