Patient Care / Our Hospitals / Eskenazi Hospital
Our housestaff rotate through four adult teaching hospitals: Indiana University Hospital, Ezkenazi Hospital, the Roudebush VA Medical Center, and Methodist Hospital, all located on or near the 500-acre campus of Indiana and Purdue Universities in Indianapolis (IUPUI) west of downtown. The IUPUI campus as a whole hosts a large undergraduate student body and is home to schools of dentistry, law, business, nursing, allied health sciences, and many more.
As a result of training in these diverse venues, residents care for patients from the entire range of socioeconomic groups with a wide diversity of illnesses and health care needs. The combination of all four hospitals is unbeatable in helping trainees understand systems of care and to become versatile in applying best practices across different hospitals. The IU residents truly experience all the different models of care and can make informed decisions about what and where they would like to practice in the future.
Eskenazi Hospital is a 315-bed community hospital completed in December 2013 that provides diverse anesthesia training. As a Level I Trauma Center, Eskenazi provides high acuity penetrating and non-penetrating trauma. Residents can expect to receive cutting edge instruction in trauma resuscitation and trauma anesthesia management. Eskenazi’s renowned burn center is a regional referral center for complex thermal injuries. This not only provides experience with burn resuscitation, but it provides instruction in advanced modes of ventilation for patients with severe inhalational injuries. Eskenazi has a high-volume obstetrics service, averaging more than 2000 deliveries per year. This provides significant neuraxial exposure while promoting anesthesia efficiency. Eskenazi’s Acute Pain Service is a consistent favorite among residents. Each resident spends two months focusing entirely on regional anesthesia. This service accomplishes greater than 3000 regional blocks yearly, all of which are performed by residents with direct staff instruction. This includes a vast selection of regional techniques, including both single shot and catheter placement. Eskenazi also provides significant training in remote anesthesia, equipping residents with anesthesia flexibility. These remote sites include anesthesia for endoscopy, pacemaker and ICD implantation, cardioversion, and complex interventional neuroradiology procedures.
